The visitors started the game one place and one point better off than their hosts for the third meeting of the season between the two sides with Soham winning the previous two encounters after progressing in the League Cup on penalties, whilst coming from behind to win 2-1 away in the reverse fixture.
Playing their second game in less than two days, Soham made just one change to the starting eleven which had won away to Ware on Thursday with Craig Gillies returning in place of Marcus Hall.

It was a quick start to the game with Chaffey having a couple of early efforts at goal before Pope was twice called into action to keep out Davidson efforts, firstly pushing his shot against the post before play was cleared in the eighth minute, before moments later tipping away the attacker’s curling ball through the area, with Gordon dipping his shot over from the resultant corner. As the half continued, the visitors edged the play although clear opportunities at either end were limited as Mochalski headed wide from Russell’s throw whilst Pope denied Wilson at his near post from Ronto’s ball, with the striker also heading over from a corner.

Soham introduced Jon Kaye for Alfie Connor at the break, and within minutes of coming on released Carden down the right, who delivered a ball across the face of goal with Russell coming in at the back post and somehow placed wide. As the half progressed, the visitors started to have the better of the play and just before the hour mark Ronto’s freekick was deflected behind with Cohen and Russell blocking efforts from Ahern and Gordon from the resultant corner. Midway through the half, an incoming Davidson was off-target from Gordon’s ball towards the back post before Pope produced a fine diving save to tip the attacker’s shot from distance over his bar. Wilson then had a goal bound effort blocked from a corner, before being replaced by Tom Robinson in the 73rd minute, with the substitute making an immediate impact floating the ball into the area from the right where Elliot Ronto rose to head wide of Pope a minute later. Soham made changes and pushed more forward in the closing stages however couldn’t find the equaliser as Mason parried Carden’s shot after he had cut into the box, whilst Chaffey twice fired wide from the edge of the area and Gillies headed behind in stoppage time.
