The Greens made two changes to the side which had won away to Brentwood Town last weekend with Jack Mochalski coming in for Lloyd Groves, whilst Dan Hobbs replaced Charley Barker following his recall to Leyton Orient, however the midfielder pulled up during warm up with Cemal Ramadan starting in his place away to a Sports side that had just won team of the month for March and were unbeaten in their last nine games.
The hosts started the game quickly and enjoyed large amounts of the first halves’ play. Inside the opening minute, Fairweather-Johnson found space down the right to run onto a pass with Conroy making an early low save to keep out his effort, with Power firing wide moments later. Sports won a number of corners inside the opening fifteen minutes with Barry, Fairweather-Johnson and Baker all off target whilst Fairweather-Johnson had another opportunity cleared off the line by Horne from another set-piece. Soham’s first meaningful attack came midway through the half when the ball was laid off to Kaye, however from the edge of the area the midfielder fired straight at Phillips. Golding, Ramadan and Mulready all had further efforts at the opposition keeper whilst Conroy made a pin-point save to keep out Power’s shot after Fairweather-Johnson had pulled the ball back from the by-line.
Within two minutes of the restart Brown had a goal ruled out due to a foul in the build-up before Conroy tipped Probets’ long range freekick over his bar and Cambridge fired an angled shot high at Phillips. Phoenix broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Theo Fairweather-Johnson collected Bryon’s right sided ball into the area, avoiding a challenge from a defender to place his shot under Conroy. However seven minutes later the visitors where level when from a Cambridge corner, Tennent had a header blocked in front of the line with Luke Brown following up and convert from close range. Five minutes later Phillips tipped Cambridge’s freekick around his post as both sides continued to press looking for a winner. Just before the end, Horne and Brown combined down the left to play the ball across the area for Maina, but the substitute’s goal bound shot was blocked before Soham secured the victory three minutes into stoppage time when Brown received Gardner’s pass playing an angled ball to the back of the area where Sam Mulready took a touch before firing an angled shot under Phillips much to the delight of the players and management as they celebrated in front of the dugout.
Despite Soham’s fourth straight win, the Greens remain three points three above the relegation zone with the two sides below also collecting wins, however do climb one place up to nineteenth with just three games remaining.
