Heybridge started the game one place higher than Soham in the table in nineteenth position, with both sides coming into the fixture on the back of big midweek wins. The Greens making two changes to the side which won at second in the table Cheshunt as Captain Robbie Mason returned from suspension, whilst there was a debut for recent signing Jack Bradshaw.
The hosts edged the early play, although clear chances were limited at either end as Lawton came off his line to deny Barham as he received a ball into the area. Just before the midway point of the half, Gent and Relizani put over and Paterson placed wide from distance. The Swifts were awarded a penalty in the 31st minute when Mentis was adjudged to have fouled Jack Barnham, with the striker getting up to convert the spot kick. However inside a minute Soham were level with Relizani and Bradshaw combining down the right for the latter to deliver a ball into the middle of the area with Sambridge punching clear, only into the path of Ryan Sharman, who after taking a touch placed into the bottom corner. The visitors were reduced to ten men with ten minutes remaining when Spyros Mentis, who had earlier been booked for the penalty, received his second yellow of the game for a foul. The two sides went in at the break level despite late efforts from Paterson, Sharman, Barham and Brown at the opposition keeper.
Despite the man disadvantage, Soham slowly started to have the better of the play in the second half and ten minutes after the restart Sharman followed up on Relizani’s blocked effort by firing across goal, before Ramon cleared McDonald’s ball off his own line, with the play switching ends where Brown curled narrowly wide from distance. Soham took the lead in the 63rd minute when Relizani worked his way through midfield to place an angled shot across Sambridge, with the ball coming back off the far post for Joe Tennent to follow up and score for the second game running. Heybridge had the opportunity to level the score again two minutes later however Lawton pushed away Ramon’s ball with Njie putting wide with the follow up. The Greens further increased their lead in the 74th minute when Mason laid off Sharman’s ball for Salim Relizani to score with an angled shot from the edge of the area. The attacker volleyed another effort wide moments later before Lawton made a double save firstly keeping out Little, then Ramon. Njie and Relizani had further efforts at the opposite keeper before Soham made sure of the points with six minutes remaining as Mason and Relizani again linked up to deliver the ball into the middle of the area for sub Darren Foxley to knock past the advancing Sambridge. With only three minutes of the game left, Soham were reduced to nine men when Relizani was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge of Nicholas Brown, who was also dismissed for collecting his second caution of the game for his reaction to the foul.
The win sees Soham record their third win of the week and move up to seventeenth in the table.
