Attwood (Foul 90) After two straight victories, Soham exited the Cambs Invitation Cup in the first round on penalties to Ridgeons League side Histon Reserves. The Greens, who included a number of former Stutes in their side, restored Joe Stroud, Rogan McGeorge and Scott Carter back into the starting line up from Saturdays game at Atherstone. After starting the game, Soham created the early efforts at goal as Richards curled an early freekick wide and Napier placed low at Lawton. Slowly, Histon started enjoying the better of the play but could not convert this into goals as Bircham made saves to keep out Attwood and Brennan, whilst they also had a penalty decision turned down and Taafe placed narrowly wide of the far post. Stroud had an effort deflected behind for a corner and Lawton pushed Mason-Smiths low shot wide with a fingertip save. Just before the end, Bircham tipped Mills long-range effort over while Bromwich and Turner also had late efforts. However, it was the hosts that finally broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart when Deakan Napier managed to get in front of a defender to connect with Carters by-line ball. His first effort hit the bar, but the attacker was quickest to the loose ball heading home from close range. Bircham then had to be alert to push Warrens far post header over, while Napier, Richards and Mason-Smith tried their luck. Midway through the half, Histon made a couple of changes as they went looking for an equaliser, with Stevenson coming closest but put just over from Brennans cross. Richards nearly scored the hosts second, but powered his effort against the woodwork. But with ten minutes left, Histon levelled the game with Jay Dowie poking in Taafes ball at the near post, before the two keepers made important late saves to keep out Pooley and Mason-Smith. Both sides had chances to win the tie during extra time, but neither could make them count as Wells hit the post, while Pooley and Carter put wide in the first period. After the break, Mason-Smith placed into the side netting and Stevenson fired high at Bircham. The hosts did find the net with two minutes remaining, but Olebunne was adjudged to be in an offside position as he converted Napiers cross, who then setup Hipwell to place wide of the near post. With the tie still even after 120 minutes, the game went to penalties, where the Stutes came out on top winning 3-1, with Simon Unwin, Zac Attwood and Zac Mills all successful for Histon, with Deakan Napier getting Sohams. Scott Carter put wide with his kick, while Shawn Richards, Eugene Libertucci and Andy Coleman all saw theirs saved.
