Soham Town Rangers are awarded major funding to launch "Rangers in the Community" project

Jack Johnson5 May - 09:47

STRFC is proud to announce the successful award of £180,177 from The National Lottery Community Fund to launch a ground-breaking new initiative.

The project, which is being funded for the next three years, will play a central role in building stronger, healthier, and more connected communities across Soham.

Thanks to players of The National Lottery, this funding will allow the club to appoint a full-time Community Liaison Manager and deliver a wide range of accessible, inclusive, and community-led activities from its Julius Martin Lane base. From warm hubs and dementia-friendly exercise classes to social connection groups, intergenerational gardening clubs, holiday food provision, and football-based engagement, the project is designed to reach people of all ages and backgrounds.

Michael Firek, Vice Chair of Soham Town Rangers, said:
"We’re absolutely thrilled to have been awarded this funding. Rangers in the Community is about so much more than football – it’s about connection, wellbeing, and giving everyone in Soham a place to belong. We’ve listened carefully to what our community wants and needs, and now we’re ready to bring those ideas to life. This support from The National Lottery Community Fund is a game-changer for us – and for Soham."

The project will also focus on supporting those facing barriers to engagement – including older adults at risk of loneliness, people living with physical or mental health conditions, families affected by the cost-of-living crisis, and communities who may feel disconnected from traditional services.

Soham Town Rangers’ facilities will be at the heart of this effort, with improvements underway to make the venue more accessible and welcoming for all. The club’s leadership is also committed to making the project financially sustainable beyond the grant period, through partnerships, sponsorship, facility hire and further funding opportunities.

Jonathan James, Chairman of Soham Town Rangers, said:
“Our ambition is for Soham Town Rangers to be more than just a football club – we want our facilities to be a true community hub. This funding enables us to make vital improvements to ensure the venue is welcoming and accessible to everyone. We’re also focused on the long-term sustainability of the project, and are already developing commercial partnerships and exploring revenue opportunities that will secure its future well beyond the grant term. This is an investment not just in our club, but in the whole Soham community.”

The club invites residents, partners, and supporters to follow the journey on social media and get involved in shaping the future of Rangers in the Community.
