Saturday 3rd August 2024 | Soham Town Rangers 4-1 Mildenhall Town FC.
Wow. Caught your breath yet? What an afternoon at the JML in which we saw Soham beat step 4 opposition Mildenhall Town 4-1! Defiantly one that will live long in the memory! STR were superb today, man for man winning battles and fighting with heart which is why they earned the win. Let's have a look back at the game.
We kicked off and within 5 minutes the Greens took the lead. Hayden Lambert was the goalscorer and what a finish it was! He struck the ball on the edge of the area and nestled it into the far right hand side of the goal, nothing that the Mildenhall Goalkeeper could do anything about. The half then came alive with the game becoming an end to end affair. Both teams had opportunities, best of which was Mildenhall who saw a headed attempt cleared off the line! Just before half time, Mildenhall were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Soham penalty area. Iron had rushed out to meet a long ball. He won the ball but also fouled the Mildenhall attacker, which led the referee to give the visitors the free-kick. This free-kick was wonderfully taken and scored by Alfie Connor, who levelled it up going into the break.
After the break however, it was all Soham. Ryan Sharman had a fantastic chance early into the half, but was saved by Pope. The Greens then eventually took the lead in the 57th minute, courtesy of a Mason Newman finish from a fantastic Junior Varela cross! Just 10 minutes later, another Varela cross was converted but this time from Ryan Sharman! Varela's outside of the boot cross found Sharman at the back post who nodded it home for 3! The goals didn't stop there either, with Callum Howe getting himself on the scoresheet as he strikes one from 25 yards out and is fumbled by the Mildenhall's Goalkeeper which made it 4! As the final whistle went, there was jubilation at the JML as Soham see themselves in the next round of the FA Cup!
Man of the Match was Junior Varela! A fantastic display which saw him get 2 assists was enough to pick up his second MOTM award of the season.
The next round will be against Harleston Town FC at the JML on Saturday 17th August.
Linked below is the post-match interview with Alex Cross, which I strongly suggest listening to. We asked him his thoughts on the game as well as looking forward to Great Yarmouth next weekend!
