Sam Spencer

Sam Spencer has announced that he is unfortunately having to retire from football, due to injury

with Soham's fixture tomorrow at home to Mulbarton Wanderers being his last competitive game before hanging up his boots.

The 29 year old defender returned to the Lane at the beginning of the season from Deeping Rangers, having previously played for the club during the 2015 campaign, whilst also having spells with Yaxley, Wisbech Town, Huntington Town and St Neots Town.

Sam broke the news on social media

End of an era
After a couple of scans and different opinions, tomorrow is the last day I put on a pair of football boots to play competitive football. The damage done to my knee is profound - I have now re-torn my meniscus and also got a huge chunk of cartilage missing. Continuing poses a threat to my quality of life, and the operations have a very low success rate, throwing into the fact I’ve already done my ACL and meniscus before. That means since 26 years of age I’ve played just four months of football. Gutted.
I am very lucky to have played and captained some great clubs whilst I’ve made some friends for life at the clubs I’ve played at. I am also lucky enough to have had some successful campaigns with these clubs, winning cups and leagues, plus personal end of season accolades.
To those still lucky enough to play at any level, enjoy it and play every game as if it’s your last. You never know what’s around the corner. One day you may get told you can never play football again. My only regret is not taking the chance to play at a higher level when I had it.
One last dance tomorrow
It’s been an absolute pleasure

Everybody at Soham would like to thank Sam for his efforts during his two spells at the club, and wish him well for the future.
