Soham Town Rangers U18 1 v Ely City U18 0 Munns Cup Quarter Final, Thursday 26/02/09 A Scott Lightfoot goal five minutes from the end of normal time saw Soham through to a semifinal showdown with Fenland rivals Wisbech Town on March 11th.

Rangers had the majority of the play laying siege to the Robins goal for long periods but found the visitors hard to break down with keeper Rob Wilson in outstanding form. Midway through the second half Lightfoot had hit the bar with a header from man of the match Jake Fuller's corner and the Greens' had squandered numerous chances but with extra time looming Fuller floated in another corner and when the hard pressed Ely defence failed to clear Lightfoot drove the ball in with a low shot just eight yards out. The first half had seen Soham well on top but creating only one clear chance when Dan Sterna split the Ely backline and Sam Riches hit his shot over from 15 yards after 37 minutes. Rangers dominated the second period having introduced substitutes Keiran Wingfield and Tom Norton at halftime and switching to 4-3-3. Robins keeper Wilson denied Wingfield and then tipped over Sheridan Stevens header as well as saves from Riches and Sterna. Stevens should have scored after being put through by Fuller but curled his shot over the bar. After Lightfoot's goal Ely nearly grabbed an equaliser in the final minute when home keeper Jaime Chamberlain failed to clear a long hopeful punt and Ely's hard working Sam Ashman toe poked the loose ball inches past the post. This was good all round team performance with Jake Fuller on top form closely followed by Elliot Smart and Alex Burr.
