The 33 year old midfielder had struggled with injury during the last season and the news brings to the end his thirteen year association with the Greens.
Simpson was one of Ian Benjamin’s first signings, arriving at the Lane at the beginning of the 2001 season from Warboys Town. In 2007/08, along with Peter Hinde, he captained the side as the Greens won the Ridgeons League title for the first time in their history, and with it promotion to the Southern League.
During his first seven years, Michael turned down numerous offers to leave, deciding to stay loyal to the club, but in November 2008 agreed to join Corby Town, signing off with a hat-trick as Soham beat Dunstable Town 3-2. However after only a month with the then Southern League Premier Division side, decided to return to the Lane. In recent years he continued to be an important member of the club with Soham just failing to reach the Ryman North play-offs.
During this time, Simmo has scored 121 goals in 574 appearances, and was named player of the year on four separate occasions.
The club would like to thank Michael for his efforts and commitment to Soham over the last thirteen years, and wish him well for the future, including his upcoming wedding later this summer.
