An update on club activities since the Annual General Meeting in October

It’s been seven months since many behind the scenes changes were made, and as such, we thought now would be a good time to update the Soham Town Rangers community on the club's position since the change.

Firstly, the board members at the helm of the club are

  • Michael Firek – Chairman
  • Scott Fretwell – Vice Chairman
  • Jonathan James – Vice Chairman
  • Jason Fretwell – Treasurer
  • Shaun Firek
  • Brett Fuller

Secondly, please do not confuse silence with inactivity. A number of committee members have volunteered and dedicated considerable amounts of time to ensuring the club is on a sound financial footing, whilst others have worked diligently through tough unprecedented conditions to get games of football on the pitch. The weather has probably been our biggest challenge!

RAINFALL
All committee members' hours spent on the pitches have been exemplary in harsh conditions with herculean amounts of rain; Kevin Brasher, Gavin Wiseman, Malcolm Howe, Scott Fretwell and Brett Fuller have worked tremendously hard to help ensure games are played at Julius Martin Lane, ultimately some games were lost, but we now seem to back on track with the games program.

The committee has now agreed to a program in connection with an external ground-keeping company to complete the extensive renovation of the pitch for next season.
New topsoil, reseeding, and an ongoing program of upkeep will start in the next few weeks and will continue well into the 2024/25 season.

IMPROVEMENTS TO JULIUS MARTIN LANE
The floodlights are currently halfway through the process of a Premier League grant, and inspections of the masts, foundations, and electrics have now been completed. We hope to have these upgraded to a new LED power-saving system for the new season, although as yet we are still awaiting the green light from the football foundation.
I think we are all acutely aware of JML's tiredness and the need to upgrade the clubhouse. This renovation is at the top of our agenda, but we await urgent news regarding the long overdue subsidence claim on the lounge. We hope to be in a position to publish further clarity in the coming weeks. This will help trigger the funds to revitalise the clubhouse.

TREES
Our friends, Stevensons, have completed a rigorous assessment of all forty-two trees to ensure that each is trimmed and complies with health and safety regulations.

FINANCE
Much work has been done to ensure a sound understanding of the accounts to ensure we understand the challenges we face as a club; forecasts are drawn up almost monthly as we start to build a clearer picture of the club's financial health. This is ultimately the basis of any decision-making process at the club, and a special thanks to Chloe Grimes for her hard work.

COMMERCIAL
Paul Skinner along with Michael Harvey are in the process of producing the club's new commercial brochure for the new season, and this is set to be released before the end of this season to all local businesses. Current sponsors, will all be contacted first before the brochure is sent to the wider local business community.

COMMUNITY
The club continues to make good in roads into the local community; a buoyant youth system that actively helps 300 children each week play football in Soham, is something we as a club are very proud of.
However, a new Junior darts academy has been established every Sunday morning for 8-14 year old budding darts enthusiasts, along with our Wildcats program for 5-11 year old girls - It’s great to see the club come alive on Sunday morning!
Our welfare and community leads Mel Brasher and Hannah Firek have begun work with Cambridge Acorns, a local charity that helps children in Soham, the club has provided mascot packages and is beginning to explore working with local schools alongside Cambridge Acorns.

THANK YOU
This is a huge collective approach with many voluntary hours that go unnoticed each week just to keep the club moving forward, and we hope to be in a position to share more exciting news in the near future, but thank you to all that have helped over the past days and months in whatever guise and we look forward to sharing and working together at Julius Martin Lane!
